Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) is a crucial part of the work we undertake. Our aim is to successfully prepare our students for life after their time at Wigan UTC. Exam results are a significant part of this but we also aim to inform and advise students about the Post-16 & Post-18 pathways available to them. This includes:

  • Mock interviews for all year 11/12 students
  • Careers sampling events to give students a taste of possible employment pathways
  • Links with and visits to FE colleges and universities
  • Provision of information and guidance on apprenticeship and traineeships
  • Academic taster sessions at our local colleges

We have extensive links with employers, including:

  • Siemens
  • Miliken
  • Network Rail
  • Sellafield
  • Endress and Hauser

A summary of what we offer can be found below.

Students

At Wigan UTC we have a comprehensive careers programme which will help equip each of our students with the relevant knowledge they need to progress and make important decisions about the future. During their time at Wigan UTC they will have the opportunity to meet with employers and providers to find out about the best possible options available to them within the local area and beyond. Work placement opportunities will be available for students via our employer partnerships. Each student will also have access to a qualified Careers Advisor whom will be able to listen to each student’s individual needs.

Parents

At Wigan UTC we will welcome parents during the year to come and speak to the careers link within the college. We can discuss how you as a parent can help your son or daughter to plan for the future and access information about labour markets and future options to support this.

Employers/Providers

Throughout the year we operate a programme of talks where employers and providers are able to come into the UTC and speak to our students. This will help our students to learn about the types of skills and qualities which will make them suitable for certain areas of work, along with the qualifications required and routes of entry. As well as employers coming into the UTC we also visit careers fairs throughout the year which helps students link up with employers and providers. Finally, as part of our Careers Programme we offer all our students the opportunity to visit the workplace. This can take the form of a day visit or an extended work placement.

HOW TO RESEARCH THE LABOUR MARKET

How to Research the Labour Market.

Not sure about career choice? Students need to reflect on their own interests, likes and dislikes, their skills and personal qualities. The Careers Advice for Parents website may help

https://www.careersadviceforparents.org/p/choosing-career-paths.html

For students who find it hard to decide, the job quiz from Prospects will help get them thinking about what to consider when choosing a career:

www.prospects.ac.uk

The National Careers Service website contains a wealth of information about career choices, including job profiles that outline training pathways, as well as a job matching tool:

The world of work changes rapidly – Where are the future growth areas for employment in our region? It’s important to consider the changing nature of work, and consider areas of high demand. In Greater Manchester, the Top 5 sectors are: Financial and Professional Services 22%, Health 13%, Retail 10%, Education 9%, Technology, Engineering and Science 9% Source: Manchester Growth Company

Many students are considering alternatives to full time degrees at University, and are increasingly looking at apprenticeships as an alternative. They are a combination of work and training, and it is possible to study to degree level and beyond on an apprenticeship. Trainees are paid employees, and all tuition fees are met by the employer.

Here is some general information about Degree Apprenticeships:

https://www.prospects.ac.uk/jobs-and-work-experience/apprenticeships/degree-apprenticeships

The number of employment sectors offering degree apprenticeships is increasing all the time: The Which? Guide below has a comprehensivesummary of the sectors involved, but it’s a good idea for students to come and have a chat with the Careers Adviser to see what opportunities are available in our area.

Here is some further advice from the Governments apprenticeship website on how parents can support young people who are looking at the apprenticeship option

At Wigan UTC, we work hard to ensure our students have to chance to meet with employers and get experience of the world of work. We have a programme of visiting speakers that offer Degree and Higher Apprenticeships.
