Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) is a crucial part of the work we do at the school throughout the time that our pupils are with us. Our hope is that we successfully prepare pupils for life after their time at Wigan UTC. Clearly exam results are a huge part of this but we also aim to inform and advise pupils about the post-16 & post-18 pathways open to them. We do this in a number of ways which, in 2017/18, included;

  • Mock job interviews for all year 11/12 students.
  • Careers sampling events to give pupils a taste of possible employment pathways.
  • Links with and visits to FE colleges and universities.
  • Provision of information and guidance on apprenticeship and traineeships.
  • Academic taster sessions at our local colleges.

We have many links with employers which include;

  • Siemens
  • Network Rail
  • Sellafield
  • Endress and Hauser

A summary of what we can offer can be found below and a detailed description of what our Careers Programme includes can be found in our Published Careers Programme.

STUDENTS

At Wigan UTC we have a comprehensive careers programme which will help equip each of our students with the relevant knowledge they need to progress and make important decisions about the future. During their time at Wigan UTC they will have the opportunity to meet with employers and providers to find out about the best possible options available to them within the local area and beyond. Work placement opportunities will be available for students who will link up with our linked companies. Each student will also have access to a qualified Careers Advisor whom will be able to listen to each student’s individual needs.

PARENTS

At Wigan UTC we will welcome parents during the year to come and speak to the careers link within the college. We can discuss how you as a parent can help your son or daughter to plan for the future and access information about labour markets and future options to support this.

EMPLOYERS/PROVIDERS

Throughout the year we operate a programme of talks where employers and providers are able to come into the UTC and speak to our students. This will help our students to learn about the types of skills and qualities which will make them suitable for certain areas of work, along with the qualifications required and routes of entry.

As well as employers coming into the UTC we also visit careers fairs throughout the year which helps students link up with employers and providers. The feedback from these events is excellent and is a great opportunity for both students, employers and providers to meet students.

Finally, as part of our Careers Programme we offer all our students the opportunity to visit the workplace. This can take the form of a day visit or an extended work placement.
